Background:
Three years of effort has culminated in the City Wide Rezoning Petition currently before the City Council. While not perfect in every way, it is a major step forward. Comment received by the City Council to date is heavily in opposition. We must counter these voices or much will be lost. Results would be decreased traffic, reduction in FAR [Floor Area Ratio or density], more housing, parking restrictions, and a permanent replacement to IPOP which is an improvement over the current one.
CRGM urges you to unite behind this effort and actively support this petition.
If you have any questions about this proposal, visit the Community Development Traffic Study to read the results of a comprehensive traffic study that the Community Development Department did to see what is in store for us if we do not lower commercial zoning limits. The study looked at 21 key intersections around the city. It concluded that after 10 or 20 years of development under current zoning, rush hour congestion, in the morning, evening, or both, will be worse than now exists at Memorial Drive and Western Avenue, in 14 of the 21 intersections. Click on "table" to see what the intersections you use will be like in 10 and 20 years with status quo. Even without allowing for normal increase in pass-through traffic, Cambridge will be near gridlock if we do not act!
