Large apartment building overshadowing 2-family residence One day, often without warning and the course of just a few hours, a familiar piece of the cityscape vanishes. Another building has been demolished to make way for a new structure that will tower over its neighbors. Or perhaps another yard has stripped of vegetation to create another backyard parking lot. The current strong demand for new housing and business space in Cambridge has created powerful economic incentives for "Fast Buck Teardowns" and infill buildings, making most of the city vulnerable to ill-conceived new construction that is out of step with surrounding dwellings, and new housing that is beyond the means of all but a few residents.
